Can foreigners work in the Cayman Islands?

Yes, foreigners can work in the Cayman Islands, but only with a work permit: by law you may not accept a job there without one (Cayman Islands Department of Tourism). The employer applies for the permit after advertising the job for 21 days on the WORC jobs portal and in local media. Since 1 May 2026, first-time permit holders must stay with the sponsoring employer for at least two years (Ministry of Caymanian Employment and Immigration). The official pages describe one work permit route for everyone who isn't Caymanian, not a separate one by nationality. Cayman Job Finder is independent and free, lists 1,488 current Cayman adverts and links each one to its official advert.

You need a work permit

"By law, you may not accept jobs in the Cayman Islands without a work permit" (Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, travel information). Work permits are handled by WORC (Workforce Opportunities & Residency Cayman). WORC's Employment Services Unit has a "Job Seeker (independent, non-Caymanian)" registration for the WORC Jobs Portal.

How it works: the employer sponsors you

  1. The job is advertised. Employers must advertise a vacancy for 21 days on the WORC electronic jobs portal and in a local newspaper (or prescribed media) before submitting a work permit application, or the application may be refused. Under WORC's current policy an advert can support a permit application for up to three months (MCEI Immigration Reform FAQs). WORC also checks whether suitable Caymanians are available (WORC FAQ).
  2. You apply on the WORC Jobs Portal or the employer's advert. Browse 1,488 current adverts.
  3. The employer applies for your work permit. The fees are set in law: see work permit fees. Express applications have a 14-working-day turnaround (MCEI).

The two-year rule (from 1 May 2026)

New immigration laws took effect on 1 May 2026 (Cayman Islands Government, commencement notice). Under them, first-time work permit holders granted a permit on or after 1 May 2026 must stay with the employer who sponsored the permit for at least two years. Leaving before then means leaving the Cayman Islands for one year, unless the Director of WORC grants an exemption. Exemptions cover circumstances such as regular unpaid overtime, work outside the job description without pay, discrimination, retaliation, harassment or redundancy; you must apply within three working days of leaving, with proof, and WORC decides within 30 working days (MCEI FAQs; Caymanian Protection (Amendment) Regulations, 2026, reg. 8A). Permits that were valid on 1 May 2026 stay valid until they expire.

Visiting first, then job hunting?

Customs and Border Control says there is no prohibition on seeking employment while visiting as a tourist, but WORC may refuse a work permit for someone who is in the Islands as a tourist visitor, and a temporary work permit for a person who entered as a visitor won't be considered unless they have left and stayed off the Islands, except in special circumstances (CBC, Entry Requirements). A separate Visitor's Work Visa allows certain business visitors up to five days of commercial activity; it is not a job permit (CBC, Visitor's Work Visa).

UK, US, Jamaican, Filipino or Indian citizens

The official pages we checked describe one work permit route, not a separate one by nationality. Entry and visa requirements do differ by nationality: check the Customs and Border Control entry requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners get jobs in the Cayman Islands?

Yes, with a work permit. By law you may not accept a job in the Cayman Islands without a work permit (Cayman Islands Department of Tourism). The employer applies for the permit through WORC after advertising the job.

Do Cayman employers sponsor work permits?

Yes. The Ministry of Caymanian Employment and Immigration describes first-time permit holders as staying with "the one who sponsored their permit", and says employers must advertise a vacancy for 21 days on the WORC electronic jobs portal and in a local newspaper (or prescribed media) before submitting a work permit application, or the application may be refused.

Can I change employers on a Cayman work permit?

Yes, but first-time work permit holders granted a permit on or after 1 May 2026 must stay with the sponsoring employer for at least two years. Leaving earlier means leaving the Cayman Islands for one year, unless the Director of WORC grants an exemption (for example for unpaid overtime, harassment, discrimination or redundancy). An exemption must be applied for within three working days of leaving the job. Domestic helpers moving to the same type of job may be allowed to change employer without leaving (Ministry of Caymanian Employment and Immigration).

Can I look for a job in Cayman while visiting as a tourist?

Customs and Border Control says there is no prohibition on seeking employment while visiting as a tourist, but WORC may refuse a work permit for a person who is in the Islands as a tourist visitor, and a temporary work permit for someone who entered as a visitor will not be considered unless the visitor has left and stayed off the Islands, except in special circumstances.

Can Americans, Britons or Jamaicans work in Cayman without a permit?

No. The official pages we checked set out one work permit route, not a separate one by nationality: if you are not Caymanian and hold no other permission to work, you need a work permit. Entry and visa requirements, which do differ by nationality, are on the Customs and Border Control website.

Can I bring my family on a Cayman work permit?

For applications from 1 May 2026, the Ministry says adding one dependant needs a minimum gross monthly income of CI$5,000, plus CI$1,000 a month for each additional dependant. Dependant fees are set in the Caymanian Protection (Fees) Regulations, 2026.

Which English tests does WORC accept?

WORC's Work Permit FAQ says it accepts TOEIC and IELTS results with work permit applications.
